Time after Tyme brings back the tradition of Nancy Drew and Harriet, the Spy. There are two teams of amateur sleuths in this novel. First, there are the college students Kathryn Frasier and CeCe Goldman who are half-sisters. Second, there are school age students Reen (Irene Penterson) and her cousin, Joanie Finelson. When Mr. Tyme (a librarian at Bellevue University) is found dead in his office after a fire, Reverend Whitefield enlists Kathryn and Cece’s help to find out if Mr. Tyme was murdered. To do so, the pair have to decipher a complex numerical code and some prayer requests that are left in a prayer box at the chapel. Adding to all of this, Reen and Joanie (mostly Reen) feel they can solve the murder on their own.
The mystery is interesting. It is thought-provoking and the theme of time and faith are scattered throughout the novel. The problem I have with the novel is that there are too many points of view for the size of it. This device makes sense when Charles Dickens utilizes it because his novels are large, and it gives him the space to develop his characters. This novel is too short for that. Also, the reader receives a third person perspective from Kathryn and CeCe. However, the reader receives Reen’s perspective in the first person. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but I do not think writers should mix the two. I felt when I was reading it, the novel was choppy and fragmented. This is unfortunate because it was an interesting mystery.
