State: Montana
Thomas Kemp is trying to start over. He grew up Amish in Indiana, but moved away from the faith. As a young man, he committed a string of crimes and it took awhile for him to realize to reform his ways. When he decides to restart his life and work on getting baptized into the Amish faith, Thomas moves to a new Amish settlement in Montana where he takes a job as a bookkeeper.
The Bishop of the settlement knows about Thomas’ past, but believes he has changed and is willing to give him a second chance. Upon moving to Montana, Thomas meets the Bishop’s niece, Emma Fisher, a young widow who has her own sketchy past. She has no interest in remarrying because of her bad first marriage, but as the novel progresses, she starts to fall in love with Thomas. Thomas develops feelings for her as well, but he is scared to tell her about his past. What if she rejects him? What if Emma can only focus on his past and not the man he has become?
This was a very moving and poignant novel. My only complaint is that Emma sometimes acts as if she is better than the people around her. She seems to forget that she has faults in her past. Emma could use some humility. Seeking forgiveness from God is something we all need to do, no matter our sins.
