The Sugar Baron's Governess
Charleston Brides- Book Four
During the American Revolutionary War, Abigail Welch loses her husband and their small child. Trying to escape her grief and find a new life, Abigail accepts a governess position in Jamaica at a plantation owned by Joshua Becket. Joshua has a daughter, Jade, who needs a governess.
Joshua is a very flawed man. Jade was conceived out of wedlock. He has abandoned his faith and sometimes spends his free time as his alter-ego—a captain of a ship that conducts privateering exploits. But with his plantation being threatened, he is forced to put others over himself and keep those under his care safe. As Joshua and Abigail work together to deal with this threat, their attraction and love with each other grows. Can Joshua have a relationship with Abigail, who is a religious woman? Can Joshua change his ways? Can he be redeemed?
My biggest issue with this novel is I felt like Joshua’s road to redemption was rushed and not as genuine as it could be. I felt like he should have to work harder to earn Abigail’s love. Outside of the romance, I thought it was an interesting historical novel, especially in dealing with the issue of slavery in Jamaican society. It presented an important issue for Christians to grapple with.
