Gabriel King has always had a rebellious nature. His rebellious nature is so prominent that he has been thinking of leaving the Amish community. His plans get disrupted when he gets injured and has to work at the gift shop with Eliza Zook on the farm he works at. Eliza has always had a crush on Gabriel since they were in school. But Gabriel is handsome and attracts a lot of girls; Eliza wears glassess and is rather uptight, so she does not feel she has a chance with Gabriel.
However, as they work together, they get to know one antoher and begin to develop feelings for one another. The potential for their relationship encounters a stumbling block with Eliza’s mother, Lovina. Due to the fact that Gabriel is thinking of leaving the Amish community, Eliza’s mother does not feel he is a good influence on her. Lovina is worried Gabriel will take Eliza away from the community. Througout the novel, Eliza and Gabriel must decide what they want out of thier lives and how to face some of the challenges they are encountering.
This was a very sweet and interesting Amish novel. Both Gabriel and Eliza gave each other something they needed. For Gabriel, something permanent and secure. For Eliza, the ability to not be so serious at times and to relax a little. The issue of Gabriel potentially leaving the Amish is a huge one and the reader undertands how important community is for the Amish. It is something non-Amish people can learn from. I highly recommend this novel.
