The nearest town to Stoney Brook was Cloverfield, a fifteen-minute drive. It did not have a major grocery store; the Wal-Mart in Stoney Brook brings in people from neighboring towns. They were going to stop at a CVS, but they came across a holiday-themed boutique on Main Street. It had all sorts of Easter items, including multi-color plastic eggs.
The proprietor of the shop was excited to see them, especially since the Sisters bought a large number of eggs. Chrissy was glad that they could give significant business to a small place.
As they piled into the van, Chrissy said, “It gives me so much satisfaction that we were able to spend money on a small business. It sends a giant middle finger to Wal-Mart…symbolically, of course.”
Chrissy felt her face warm as she looked at the nuns giving her startled looks, except for Sister Elise. Not only was she young, but she had not been in the convent that long. She grinned at Chrissy. “Sometimes, I think you’ve completely abandoned any sense of rebellion. And then you surprise me.”
Mother Superior glared at her. “I see I have my work cut out for me when it comes to you.”
But Sister Elise was not deterred and just smiled sweetly at Mother Superior. For a brief moment, Chrissy wondered if her young friend really belonged in the convent. Chrissy knew Elise had become disenchanted with college, but was this the right fit for her?
Emma interrupted her thoughts. “I was wondering…I paid attention on the drive here. Could I drive home?”
All the nuns raised their eyebrows and looked at Chrissy. Before she could respond, Mother Superior frowned at her. “Aren’t you from England? Don’t they drive on the wrong side of the road?”
Emma opened her mouth, but Chrissy said, “Why don’t we do some practicing around Stoney Brook before you start driving, not to mention getting a driver’s license. The next time your uncle takes me somewhere you can drive with his supervision, as soon as you acquire your driver’s permit.”
To Chrissy’s relief, Emma conceded. As Chrissy laid back in her seat, she could not help but grin.
Edward was going to kill her.
This is the end of my second short story. Currently, I am reading the fourth installment of the Jane Austen Mystery Series. This will be the next book review I will be working on.
