A former opera singer, Maggie Lee, seeks refuge from fame in a house at the end of a moor. One day, her maid comes upon an inured escaped convict, Oliver Ward. Maggie takes him in and nurses him back to health. Upon his recovery, he contends that he is innocent and Maggie learns that he is a member of Parliment. She also finds out that they share the same enemy, a rogue aristocrat Maggie had to deal with when she was an opera singer. Maggie and Oliver decide to team up to take this individual down and prove Oliver’s innocence. Throughout the course of their partnership, they begin to fall in love with one another. Both Maggie and Oliver are scared; they both have been wronged by society and do not trust people. Can they overcome their past struggles and put faith in God? Can they take a chance on love and come together?
I absolutely loved this novel. It had a nice mixture of romance and suspense. It reminded me a little of Charles Dickens because of the exposure of the corruption in the justice system. The novel illustrates that it is imortant to fight for justice when injustice exists. It was also nice to see a woman chatacter in a profession that was not in the teaching field; the reader sees that there were other professions women could have during this time period, even if there were still restrictions. I highly recommend this novel.
