The Heir's Predicament
Book 6- The Leeward Islands Series
Maggie Prescott is committed to finding out the truth about her biological mother. Maggie was adopted as a young child by a couple who she adores. Pressure is mounting for her to start looking for a husband, but she is concerned about her lineage. Rumors are spreading that she was born out of wedlock, which is affecting the young men who are interested in her. As a result, she asks her uncle, Captain Anthony Middleton, to come with her to Antigua to help find more information about her mother. Maggie’s mother lived in an estate where Lord Samuel Granville now lives. Maggie breaks into the estate to look for her mother’s diary. While escaping the estate, she is accidentally shot. Feeling guilty, Samuel decides to take her in until her injury is healed.
Samuel used to live in England. He was engaged to a young woman, but his former friend was caught kissing her. He was unable to control his anger and punched his friend. The court ended up banishing him to Antigua, especially since Samuel refused to apologize to him.
Throughout Maggie’s time there, Samuel promised to help her find out the truth about her mother. He, though, starts to have doubts. He worries that Maggie may actually have a claim on the estate. And the estate is very important to him. But as Samuel starts to fall in love with Maggie, does the estate really matter to him? And does it really matter whether or not Maggie is legitimate?
This was an interesting historical romance. Antigua is not a place I am familiar with and I was captivated by the culture there. The only drawback was the subplot of the slaves who worked the plantation. There was supposed to be a vote on whether or not the slaves would be emancipated. Both Maggie and Samuel seemed to infer that they were supportive of emancipation, but this issue was never resolved. How did the vote go? Will the slaves be freed? The romance, though, was sweet and moving. And frankly, it was nice to read a historical novel that did not take place mostly in England.
