World War Two pilots James Clarke (British) and Kenneth Brodelon (American) find themselves in a German POW (Prisoner of War) camp. They, along with the other men, try to escape with no success. And then through James’ sister, Beryl Clarke, she gives them clues (Germans read their mail) on an escape route. Beryl is a secretary at Waddington Game Company. The company is working to send special Monopoly games to the POW camps, along with a special map, to help them escape. James and Kenneth will have to find a way to execute the plan while the Germans grow more suspicious of the prisoners’ activities.
Prior to the war, Kenneth attended Oxford, in addition to James and Beryl. Kenneth and Beryl grew close and started developing feelings for one another. Reluctantly, they went their separate ways following the beginnings of the war. Throughout the ordeal of James and Kenneth trying to escape, Kenneth and Beryl find themselves thinking of each other quite a bit. Its an interesting romance where they began to fall in love again through letters.
This was a unique World War Two novel. I highly recommend it, especially if one wants to read a more detailed account of what POW camps were like. The board game twist was very clever.
