Aubrey Willot, a young widow, is pregnant and trying to figure out a future for her and her unborn child. Aubrey did not have a happy marriage. Not only was her late husband abusive, but he was also a criminal. When Aubrey learns that her late husband double-crossed a ruthless business associate, she must accept the protection of a bounty hunter, Nathan Reed. Nathan is a complex man. He has a checkered past, which includes some criminal behavior. He is trying to make a life for his orphaned niece; Nathan is forced to keep her under the care of others until he can make enough money to support her. Nathan has an opportunity to retrieve a set of stolen documents to claim a reward, but doing so means he would have to deceive Aubrey who he is falling in love with. What will happen if Nathan’s secrets are exposed? Will Aubrey forgive him? Does Aubrey and Nathan have a future together?
This was a captivating historical romance with much suspense. I liked how the author set the novel in California and the reader receives a glimpse of what San Francisco was like during the 1800s (I was raised in California). Aubrey is an interesting, independent woman who is struggling to trust a man again. Nathan, while flawed, is a hero I feel sympathy for and can root for. I highly recommend this novel.
