The Bookshop of Secrets
Book Review of Mollie Rushmeyer's Novel
Still recovering from a traumatic string of events, Hope Sparrow arrives in the small town of Wanishin Falls looking for a series of books her mother left her after her death. She ends up at a small bookstore called Dusty Jackets where she befriends the owners, an elderly couple, who help her look for the books, but also give her a temporary job at the bookstore. She only intends to stay for a couple of months, but then she meets the elderly couple’s grandson, Ronan Barrick, who she starts to develop feelings for. Hope, however, is determined to keep her distance given past scars. She finds some interesting information in some of her mother’s books that lead to a mystery surrounding Hope’s and Ronan’s ancestors. Ronan helps Hope and they end up growing closer.
This was a wonderful story about two wounded individuals who struggle to move forward in their lives. They both have a complicated relationship with God and they try to find their way back to Him. The small town is a charming one with interesting secondary characters. My favorite part of the novel is the discussions the characters have about literary classics. As someone who studied English in college, I really enjoyed these moments. I highly recommend this novel.
