Admist all of this, he is tasked with investigating a murder of a roommate of one young singer, Mistel Wepp, who Cole had met earlier. As Cole investigates, with Mistel’s help, they start to have feelings for one another. But Cole’s investigation uncovers a link to the dark arts/magic. Can Cole and Mistel find a way to defeat the dark magic, or will their lives end before they can pursue a relationship?
This novel started out strong, but frankly, I found the ending to be disappointing. Apparently, the novel has an epilogue, but when you reach the end of the novel. the publisher asks you to subscribe to their newsletter in order to get access it. I found this to be very gimmicky and a publisher should not do this.
The other problem is that this series is a spin-off of a Christian fantasy series written several years ago. So, it was rather a challenge to understand the fantasy world I had just stepped into. Concepts of the fantasy world were not completely explained. I eventually caught up to some concepts, but it was difficult.
To be fair, a praiseworthy quality of this novel was showing how war can have a psychological effect on humans. And we should be more mindful of that when our soldiers return home from war.
