Patience Abbott has just lost her mother. Besides her brother, William, the only family she has left is her father who lives in America. For years, her father has gone on ship expeditions and has never liked being at home for long periods of time. Due to an injury he sustained on one of these expeditions and helping a friend in America, he ends up staying there, much to the disappointment and hurt of Patience. Upon her mother’s death, her father writes to them in England asking them to live with him in America (Boston, Massachusetts). William has every intention of remaining in England, but Patience wants him to accompany her on the long trip overseas.
Patience struggles to reconnect with her father, but she meets a local blacksmith, Josiah Wagner, who she starts to develop feelings for. The feelings are also on Josiah’s side, but he is a member of the Sons of Liberty, a group of activists who want independence from England. This creates complications since Patience’s father is a Loyalist; he is for allegiance to England. Can Patience have both her father and Josiah in her life? Can her father accept her and Josiah’s growing affection toward one another or is he going to do what it takes to make sure she marries a Loyalist?
This was an excellent Christian historical novel mixed with sweet romance and suspense. The author does a good job showing the struggle Patience encounters between her father and Josiah. Despite the story being historical, families being torn apart by differing political beliefs is something we can relate to today. And essentially, I believe the author’s message is that while people should believe in their convictions, it does not mean it should interfere with the love of a family member.
