Marti Sommers is trying to prove something to herself. She has been investigating a series of thefts in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia when one particular theft turns deadly. She blames herself and as a result, she is determined to do her own investigation during her extended leave. She is lead to the small town of Mountain Loft where she reconnects with Luke Lehman, a former cop she used to work with. As a result of an injury, Luke moves back to the town to raise his Amish nieces and nephew. While Luke is deciding whether he will stay to raise the children and be baptized or return to Atlanta, he helps Marti with the investigation.
I am always fascinated with Amish novels that feature an Amish main character and a non-Amish main character, especially if they are a potential romantic couple. In the Amish tradition, if a non-Amish person is to marry an Amish one, he or she must convert into the Amish faith. In our modern culture, this is foreign to us. Marriage between two different religions do not always require one conversion. And then there’s the fact that the Amish lifestyle is very different than mainstream American culture.
In this novel, Marti and Luke are attracted to one another. The question is if Luke decides to continue being the guardian of his nieces and nephew, he will have to go through baptism to convert to the Amish faith. If that happens, will Marti follow him, or will she return to Atlanta?
I highly recommend this novel.
