The fourth installment of the Royal Spyness series is the perfect novel to read during Halloween. Lady Georgiana, 34th in line to the English throne (year: 1933), is asked to represent the Queen at a royal wedding in Transylvania. Both the bride and the groom are princess and prince of countries in Eastern Europe. Before Georgie can go, though, the Queen informs her that she must bring her own maid. Georgie does not have a maid because she is broke. Her brother and sister-in-law (mostly her sister-in-law) refuse to finance a maid.
Her maternal grandfather’s girlfriend offers a friend of hers named Queenie. Georgie enters an arrangement with Queenie that if she is her maid for this wedding, Georgie will pay her later. However, Queenie turns out to be a disaster. She is completely incompetent, but as the novel progresses, she grows on me. Queenie is extremely loyal and that in itself is very endearing. Her name, by the way, was an interesting choice from a class perspective.
Georgie experiences some frightening events at the castle in Transylvania. A stranger breaks into her bedroom at night. Georgie catches red liquid falling down the bride’s neck, which Georgie thinks is blood. And one of the guests is poisoned. At one point, Georgie starts to wonder if some of the inhabitants at the castle are vampires. I was somewhat surprised that Georgie would jump to the vampire angle because I consider her to be level-headed for a royal. But I suppose if I was in a castle in Transylvania and all these weird events were happening, I might come to that conclusion as well.
The last three mysteries have been predictable to me. I am happy to say the fourth installment was not. When I thought I knew the resolution, something happened to doubt myself. I was not disappointed and thought it was a decent mystery.
Georgie’s romance with the mysterious Darcy O’Mara continued to grow a little. Her sister-in-law does not approve of him, so that will be an interesting obstacle to overcome.
