Katherine McFarlane does not want to stay with her aunt during the course of the Civil War. She sneaks aboard her father’s ship and hides out until she is discovered. Committed to keeping her safe, he takes Katherine to a town in Florida where her great-aunt Sally lives. She, along with their freed slave, John, stays with her great-aunt. Sally is eccentric, but she makes Katherine help with maintaining the house and its outside gardens, which introduces Katherine to physical labor and as a result, she becomes closer to her great-aunt.
Additionally, a Confederate soldier, Clay Harris, becomes attracted to Katherine and he ends up escorting her to the annual ball. Katherine finds him attractive, but questions his character. He does not treat the slaves that work for his family very well and he frowns upon Katherine having a friendly relationship with John. Later in the novel, an injured soldier (not Confederate) shipwrecks near her great-aunt’s house due to a hurricane. Katherine hides him from Clay, but also develops an attraction to this soldier creating complications for her. Katherine wants to warn her father about the Union blockade, but she does not know who to trust. Who can she trust, and does she have a chance for romance? And how does she know if she really has fallen in love with someone?
This novel is interesting and engaging. It also presents a complex situation for a young woman who is trying to make sense of the Civil War. I think it was very unique that her companion is a freed slave. She has a lot of respect for him and treats him more like that of a friend than someone who works for her family. But as a Southern woman, she is surrounded by many people who do not believe in treating other races equally. The novel has a strong theme of respecting all people because we are all God’s creation and made in His image.
