Pursued in the Wilderness
Book Review of Loretta Eidson's Novel
K-9 handler Officer Trent Williston is enjoying some solitary time in nature when a nine-month pregnant woman, Brooke Chandler, runs into his campsite. Brooke’s husband, Nick, has just been murdered by men looking to collect debts from him. Nick had been gambling very much and he bet his future baby as payment. The men are planning on selling Brooke’s baby in the black market. Trent decides to help her escape them and they embark on a trek in the wilderness that proves to be very dangerous.
One of the interesting parts of the novel is that Trent loves nature, but has lost his faith in God. Brooke, on the other hand, despises nature and its many animals, but has solid faith in God. I found this interesting because God created nature and for them to not see that is ironic. Their trek through nature becomes a spiritual one where they both have to face their shortcomings.
I thought the journey through the wilderness was handled well. I had some misgivings of their romantic feelings since Brooke just lost her husband. It is true that Brooke and Nick were headed to divorce, so the love was obviously gone. However, I thought the romance may have been rushed a little. Overall, though, I thought the novel was written well. I especially thought the actions they went through to survive the wilderness illustrated a thorough knowledge of wilderness survival.
