More than Conquerors
Biblical Fiction by Carole Towriss
In the biblical fiction novel More than Conquerors, Jason, a Jew, has lost both his parents and his faith. When a Jewish preacher, Paulos, visits the local synagogue and starts preaching that Jesus is the Messiah, it causes much controversy with the Jewish people, especially the synagogue leaders. Jason is outraged at first, but throughout the novel, he starts to question if Paulos is actually making some sense.
The novel is also centered around Kassandra (Kassi), the daughter of a prominent politarch. Kassi’s father wants her to marry a prominent member of the community. Kassi, though, has other dreams. She wants to establish a business in town where she helps women who are suffering. She buys a building that she uses to bake bread and hires poor women in the community to staff it. Kassi wants more from her life and she is willing to be banished from her father’s house in order to have it.
Kassi is captivated by Paulos and wants to follow him, despite that she is not a Jew. Through the creation of her business, she meets Jason and they become attracted to one another. But can this relationship materialize into anything? Jason is a Jew and Kassi is a Greek. Does that matter? Do they need to listen to Paulos when he says that the Messiah died for all people, even those who are not Jewish?
This was the first biblical fiction novel I read. I enjoyed it immensely. The historical and cultural context was interesting. Kassi and Jason were a great hero and heroine. It had romance, action, suspense, and deep theology. I highly recommend it.
