Justice Delayed
Book One- The Seeking Justice Series
Melender Harman has just been released from prison after being there for seventeen years. She was found guilty of murdering her one year-old cousin, Jesse, even though she has maintained her innocence. When she comes in contact with a journalist, Brogan Gilmore, on an entirely different matter, Brogan eventually decides to reopen and investigate her case to find out what happened to Jesse (his body was never recovered or found).
Brogan is seeking a second chance. While he was a journalist in New York, he wrote a story by using unethical means and was let go. He is given a second chance at a newspaper in Virginia, outside of Washington, DC. Brogan uses this story to recalibrate his investigative journalist career. But throughout the investigation, he starts to develop feelings for Melender and struggles to be objective. Can he be objective despite his growing attraction to her? If the facts lead to Melender being guilty, will Brogan be able to handle that? And can both Brogan and Melender find the justice they seek?
While I thought the romance between Brogan and Melender was sweet and moving, I felt the conclusion of the mystery and what happened to Jesse was fairly predictable. Since this novel was more than just a mystery and there were themes of forgiveness, second chances, and family loyalty, I did not feel it took away from the crux of the novel. But it was a little disappointing.
The novel did a good job with setting. It took place in the Washington, DC area, which is where I live and the author’s details were accurate. I was not a big fan of the multiple points of view. It felt choppy at times and I found myself wanting to get more of Brogan and Melender’s perspective.
