His Grace's Governess
Book One: Saving the Spinsters
Eleanor Clairbridge has resigned herself to a life of a spinster. She is the daughter of a baron who when he passed away, he left the family in economic hardship due to a bad investment he made. Desperate for her mother to be able to keep the home she grew up in and help finance repairs, she becomes the governess for Duke Edmund Colhampton. Edmund lost his entire family in a tragic carriage accident and now has custody of his five-year-old niece. He still struggles with grief and is hesitant to love anyone because he fears losing anyone again. This resignation is challenged with the appearance of Eleanor. Attraction grows to love; the same happens to Eleanor. But both struggle to express their feelings to one another. Can they overcome their fears before it’s too late?
This was an interesting take on the governess-employer trope. One of the interesting aspects of it was Eleanor’s love of science and mathematics. Edmund wants his niece to have a strong education in mathematics and science, which is rare for women to have during the Regency period. It is a refreshing part of the story.
The romance is sweet and moving. However, I found the “villains” of the novel to be too two-dimensional and simplistic. Overall, though, it was a captivating, sweet romance.
