In the third installment, Lilac Nielsen starts courting her crush, the Reverend Ethan Pritchard. Additionally, a newspaper has just accepted Lilac’s drawings for publication. They want to publish her drawings on a regular basis. But when scandal reaches Ethan, Lilac must decide if she is going to stand by him. And Lilac must decide througout the course of the novel if she has a future with Etan.
I believe it is a general rule that if a reader does not like either the main hero or heroine, then the novel will have problems. I am afraid I did not like Ethan very much. I found him to be very naive and sometimes makes stupid decisions. I found, instead, the plot line between Climie and Jesse to be more engaging. Climie is recovering from an abusive marriage as she helps run the local boarding house. And Jesse has a stutter he is working through as he works in construction. They develop a sweet romance.
It is still a decent novel, but its biggest weakness is that the supporting characters are more interesting than the main ones.
