Dr. Harriet Bailey has moved to the small English village of White Church Bay in Yorkshire to take over her late grandfather’s vet clinic at Cobble Hill Farm. She is just starting to settle into this new life when one of the dogs she is boarding digs up a chest of jewelry that had been placed there years ago. It turns out the jewelry was stolen from Julian Montcliff’s estate. The discovery is leading people to believe that Hailey’s grandfather was behind the theft. Can Harriet clear his name? Can she figure out who buried the treasure there?
The mystery was an engaging one. Harriet is a likeable amateur sleuth with her assistant, Polly, helping her to discover the truth. There is a unique cast of animals throughout the novel that provide lighter moments in the story. Overall, the mystery kept me guessing and I thought it had enough twists and turns. There was also a foreshadowing of a potential romantic relationship between Harriet and the local pastor, Will Knight.
