When widow Michael Tang comes across Ellie while on horseback, he decides to help her. Ellie has amnesia. She woke up in a cave not knowing how she got there and not knowing much about herself. Michael takes her back to his family’s ranch to recuperate, but she is attacked by a group of men and they attempt to kidnap her. As Ellie’s memory starts to come back, she realizes some business deals her late husband had been involved with had not set right with her. When he passed away, she inherited his share of the business, and she raised issues with certain business practices with her brother-in-law and father-in-law. As a result, her brother-in-law is after Ellie to force her to sign business papers and he is willing to use force. Michael promises to protect her and they both go on a journey through the woods surrounding the ranch to escape her brother-in-law. Along the way, they begin to develop feelings for one another, which scares them because they are not quite ready to move on from their late spouses.
The best part of this novel was the conversations Michael and Ellie had about being widows. I thought it was raw and honest. They both needed someone to talk to about being a widow and all the feelings that come with that in order to move on. The action was intense; Michael and Ellie having to run away from Ellie’s brother-in-law in the middle of the snow-layered woods, especially at night seemed very terrifying. Overall, it was a great romantic suspense novel.
