Amalia Perez has been running from her past for a long time. Her real name is Sofia Sanchez and following college, she joined the CIA. While she was on assignment in Columbia, her fiancé (a fellow agent) betrayed her and she is captured. When she finally escapes, she is unable to stop an assassin. The CIA thinks she is a traitor and thus, changes her name to Amalia Perez and starts a new life.
Years later, she is working security for the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency. Her new assignment is to protect a witness and journalist, Michael Barrett, who is set to testify against an individual responsible for many crimes. The problem is Michael is Amalia’s childhood best friend and knows her past. Michael has been looking for Amalia for the last twelve years and is shocked to finally see her. He is disturbed to find that she has become somebody else— cold, detached, and no longer a Christian. He is committed to finding Sofia deep inside of Amalia. In the meantime, though, they must stop an assassin before he kills them.
This was another great installment in the series. I really loved the theme of finding your true identity and the importance of objective truth. The development of Michael and Amalia’s relationship was well done and it was a sweet romance. And the suspense was great as well; there were plenty of surprises. I am looking forward to reading the next installment.
