Five-year old Boone Harrington just lost his father; he was killed by men breaking into their house. His mother was put in a coma and now he is in the care of a social worker, Lucy Taylor. The arrangement is temporary until it is determined the seriousness of his mother’s condition. Will she wake-up and if she does, will she be able to take care of Boone? The men who came into Boone’s house were connected to a case Boone’s father was working on; he was a district attorney.
While Lucy is driving through a national park with Boone on her way to her apartment, she is nervous that they don’t have a police escort. That ends up being a valid concern because someone tries to run her off the road. She and Boone are rescued by a ranger, Noah Holt. He is aware of the case surrounding Boone’s father and helps them navigate the woods as they are running from the people who broke into Boone’s house. They are apparently searching for something that Boone has, but both Lucy and Noah are baffled by this.
Lucy and Noah’s relationship is awkward at first. Lucy dislikes the woods and Noah comes off as gruff. But as they work together to run from danger and they get to know one another, they grow closer and develop feelings for each other. But they feel they are so different. Do they have a future together? And can they escape the national park safely?
I really enjoyed this novel. The suspense aspect of the novel had some surprise twists and turns. The romance was sweet and Boone was a cute child. I highly recommend this novel.
