Beryl's Bounty Hunter
Christian Historical Novel by Linda Shenton Matchett
Beryl Atherton has just migrated from England to the United States to start a new life. She has joined a mail order bride service in hopes that she will be paired off with a potential husband. But things do not go well when she arrives at Rocky Mountain Springs. Beryl discovers that the mail order bride service is shady and escapes the train station. In town, she encounters a young woman married to a prominent Scottish man who helps Beryl and offers her sanctuary at her house. She also takes her to a man named Lucas Wolf who is a bounty hunter. Lucas promises to investigate the mail order bride service, but Beryl wants to get involved in the investigation. Lucas is reluctant to get her involved, but Beryl is persistent, so he eventually caves and allows it.
Throughout their investigation, Beryl and Lucas develop feelings for one another. Lucas and Beryl, who are both used to being alone, wonder if they have a future together. But as they become deeper into the investigation, Beryl’s life could be in danger. Can the people behind the mail order bride service be brought to justice while keeping Beryl safe? Is there in fact a future for Lucas and Beryl?
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It had a nice balance between romance and suspense. The author demonstrates throughout the text that she understands the historical period very well. The two main characters are very engaging and interesting, which creates very compelling romantic tension. I highly recommend this novel.
