Author Interview- Jane Daly
Author of Christian Romantic Suspense Novel
1. What kind of research did you have to do for this story?
I’d never written a romantic suspense before, and didn’t have a good grasp on FBI procedures. I met a former FBI agent in my travels and he was a huge resource in making sure some of the details were correct.
What was the most challenging aspect of writing this story?
It’s always a challenge to keep readers interested until the end. They have to be invested in the characters, so they have to be flawed, yet likeable. How they respond to the circumstances I throw at them have to be believable.
What was the easiest aspect of writing this story?
I set the story in the real town of Ione, CA. I’m familiar with the area and have friends who live there. At the time, I was able to spend time in the town and become familiar with landmarks, etc.
How did you incorporate Christian themes into your story?
I wanted both main characters to be Christians but also struggle with the same things we all struggle with – doubt, frustration, sadness, loss. I try to make it natural for the characters to pray, read the Bible, and talk to God.
Is the genre of this story a new one for you to write in or do you have experience with this genre?
At the time I wrote this, it was a new genre for me.
In writing this story, did you plan it out in detail or were there parts of the plot that came to you unexpectedly?
Yes and no! I do like to let things carry me along as I write, but there’s a certain amount of planning that has to go into romantic suspense. The plot has to be believable. I use 3x5 cards and write out possible scenes, but the in between stuff is all unplanned.
